Christian Nolle is a Danish-German image maker based in London. His work mostly explores the friction between the cities we live in, aviation, and geo-politics.
His approach frequently involves repeated trips to the same neighbourhoods, either by bicycle or on foot. This revisiting allows him to uncover subtle details and overlooked elements that only gradually surface over time. This process often results in maps or a series of photographs.
Projects include a decades long ongoing project about Heathrow airport, The Cranford Agreement, which explores the area surrounding the airport. Other flying-related projects include a portrait of FunchalĀ in Madeira andĀ Tenerife South.
Bigger under takings are London Polygon which mapped out the capital's airspace on bike alongside Point of Approach, that merged the fleeting glimpse of approaching aircraft with their data counterpart alongside many other adventures.
He is the editor of Direction of Travel, a newspaper that chronicles the visual history of airlines and the culture of flying. The magazine is published once a year and available globally in shops from Bristol to Singapore. You can listen to an interview with him about the magazine on Monocle Radio.
He also runs a small digital design and development studio based in South London called Good Caesar.
Christian holds a Bachelor's degree in Photography from the Surrey Institute of Art & Design (2002) and a Master's degree in Communication Design from Central St. Martins, University of the Arts London (2008). His work has been exhibited in Denmark, Germany, Austria, and the United Kingdom.
This first version of this site went live in 1997 and has seen many different designs, edits and constellations over the years. Today it shows both work in progress projects and an archive of past undertakings.
